Heated vests, heated vest liners, and heated jackets are a great idea for anyone who has to be outdoors. There are several different types of vest and liners and the exact heating method depends to a great extent on the use that the garment will be put to.

Unlike heated gloves and socks that often are powered by disposable “D” cell batteries, heated vests mean business. Those designed for everyday wear are usually powered by a rechargeable battery pack that may be designed to be unobtrusive. Those vests designed for motorcycle riders are usually powered directly off the bike’s electrical system, providing continuous heat for the duration of the ride.

A third design is available that is a hybrid of these two power systems. This type of heated vest uses a portable, rechargeable battery pack that can be disconnected so that the vest can plug directly into a motorcycle’s electrical system. This allows the best of both world’s in a way since the user has the unlimited freedom that being tetherless can give, but also has the long lasting power availability that a motorcycle offers.

One thing to watch for is the ability to use the vest to power other devices. Some garments, such as the Synergy line, allow other accessories, like heated gloves to be used with the vest. Having a matched set of these garments can provide a much more stable power supply to the accessories so you don’t have to rely on “D” cell batteries to keep you fingers warm.

Heated vests are made using several different materials for the heating coils. Carbon Fibers have been around for awhile and are known reliable, but there are several newer materials that have been developed as heating systems and some of these are ultra thin and flexible, while still being reliable.

There are also several different materials used for the vest itself. Rip-stop nylon is a popular choice. Some vests have a thermal shield built in, this is a reflective layer that helps to control heat loss. Others are Thinsulate ™ insulated to help slow heat loss. A slower rate of heat loss means you can operate the vest at a lower temperature which will extend battery life when using a portable electrical source.
